|Rec A Championship||1st|
attached find pictures of our rec A championship victory. one is the official picture (with official times and placings) and the other is an "unofficial" picture. captain chuck found these pictures on the internet. i'm merely recycling. notice how the buoys were nowhere near the finish line.
after seeing these pictures, i was so excited, i had to go for a 3 mile run to blow off some steam... i now have new wallpaper for all of my computers...
olaf did some number crunching and out of the 89 races this past weekend, lane 9 produced only one victory - guess which team bucked all odds and ran away with the victory?
hope to see you all at my place this weekend for time trials!!! the LB race and PDBA championships are only a few weeks away!!!
For those of you who haven’t heard, Leon has found a new supplier of uniforms. The graphics are slightly different, but maintains the red Tshirt style with the white stripe on the sleeves.
The major differences are:
Cool Max material. This is the ultra cool wazoo breathable material used in the Dieselfish and Kokopeli race jerseys offered by Regatta Sports.
The artwork is “die sublimated” or something so they will not peel off. The color is in the fabric.
We have sizing samples available at practice now, so come out and check out the material and get fitted. There are Mens and Ladies fits available. Go snug or go baggy. I hear the sizes run a little large than conventional sizing, so you should check them out.
See you all on the water...
I've attached an picture that I took of the rec a championship race a few strokes short for the finish line. This is a smaller version than the original(which is around 2.5mbs?), feel free to ask for the original image. More pics to come soon. In the mean time, enjoy this one!
Oh yeah, thank you all for inviting me to join LARD at Vancouver, it was certainly the best dbing experience I've had so far. Hopefully I'll get another chance to join you all out on the water (like Saturday!)
Hello from Canada!
Lilly Chen (June 13, 2011)
The following is a journal entry that was written a couple of days after the fact, but still in Vancouver. This was my first race with LARD... I stayed a few extra days because my cousins we out there too so I spent the last night or two with them. My, what a pleasure it was to take unlimited days off from nothingness!!! I can't wait til we go to a new race venue and do this sort of thing all over again. :)
Hello from Canada! Vancouver to be exact. Today is the longest day of the year, June 21st, 2005 -- summer solstice. Also the first day of summer.
Unfortunately here in Vancouver, it started raining (again) in the afternoon.
This trip has been great so far. Just a recap of what's been done:
Thurs June 16th, 2005
Arrived in Vancouver in the evening with Gary, his mom and Karen. AFTER taking a final that included an earthquake. So not cool. :(
Caroline (my cousin) picked me up and we got some Chinese takeout and finally made it to the hotel. [I was fortunate enough to share the room with Karen Cheng, Karen Chan and Jackie Tsai. That night, only Karen Chan was there. Other LARDies that had arrived included Carla and Diane.]
Fri June 17th, 2005
Woke up, went to breakfast with Karen (K2) at the hotel restaurant. Went to Granville Island with her, Diane and Carla...in the pouring rain! [it was wet indeed...brrr] Then had practice in the afternoon. At least the rain had cleared up by then. Went to dinner at Da Pasta Bar [no longer open :((( I remember Diane was getting a lot of phone calls and was concerned about her upcoming phone bill!] with about half the crew...ping pong at night... then SLEEP!

Race Day #1
8:44am 1st mixed race...forgot what we placed. I didn't race in it.
Later in the afternoon we had our second race. Once again I forgot our placing but I think the time was 2.06.92? Women's race was intense too. We came in 4th thanks to help from the Guppies. I raced in both races.
For dinner we went to the Wilson Steakhouse right across the street from our hotel. GOOD FOOD!! [This restaurant was fairly new and unfortunately the doors closed before the next tournament. What a pity. It was so convienent!! We probably ate them out of business that very night...] Leon bought us drinks for our (me & Gary's) birthdays and we also got to know Mike and Jason Ni better. Good times.

Race Day #2
3rd mixed race...YAY! Came in 3rd. Beat out Wasabi Huge I think. I was on that boat too...
4th mixed...FINALS --> what did we come in as???
NUMBER 1 BABY!!!!!
It was GOOD! haha...
Then came genders. Men placed 2nd, Women placed 4th.
That night we celebrated at Shabusan or something like that...all you can eat sushi and Korean BBQ. Yum!

Bike Ride Thru Stanley Park
It was BEAUTIFUL! [despite Diane falling off her bike and scraping her leg. Matt and I had first aid kits and saved the ride.. my initiation towards *perhaps one day* following in Diane's footsteps. Scary, isn't it?] Especially as we passed English Bay. It looked like an image right out of a painting.
Took us awhile and it was incredibily tiring but oh so fun.
Dinner was at Hon's Wonton Place in Chinatown but it didn't look too busy! Ended the night by watching Mr. and MRs. Smith. Good movie. Brad Pitt = hot. Angelina Jolie = purty. [yes, those were my words!]
Tues June 21st, 2005 Shopping
We (Karen x2, TDo, me) slept in so we didn't go kayaking. Turns out they went canoeing instead. It was a funny night though. I shared the bed with K2 and she fell asleep on top of all the sheets. I slapped her legs to get her to move but she just nudged a bit. [note for anyone who shares a bed with k2.. she's a heavy sleeper!]
We went shopping all afternoon, had lunch at the Milestone and I finally got a taste of the Bellini. That was GOOD!

Here's an old email.. It was sent to my Austrailian paddling friend whom I had met at the college race in China the previous year:
Vancouver was AWESOME!!!! LARD came in 1st for the Rec Division A.. ohhh victory is so sweet! hahaha.. it was the 6th year the team came out and FIRST time they got hardware. I can brag all I want too cuz I was in 3 of the 4 mixed races. [one of the few times I have said that outright! so don't hold it against me :P] :P Paddling too! Not just sitting in as a drummer on some random team.. haha.. Good times. [at the China race, I sat in as their drummer for one heat] Our winning time was 2.10.something.. but then we also had a race where we came in at like 2.08. CRAZINESS!! I told Gary, I never want to go back to a 2.30something race!!! Cuz that's how we usually do.. I think. Oh man competition was fierce. But we beat out all the hardcore teams in the end. Okay, at least for our division. Just thinkin about the festival is making me all choked up!! Ohhhhh.. it's just indescribable. I had SO much fun!! It cost quite a bit but it was all worth it. I stayed for 7 days and made the most outta it all. I didn't hold back, got sick but didn't let it get to me. Oddly enough the 'cold' mysteriously dissappeared like 3 days later. I have a pic of our final race, we were like two strokes behind the finish line but you could totally tell that no one else would be able to catch up. YEEEEEE! so happy so happy!!!!
I don't know how else to describe the trip. People asked about it and all I can share with them is the last race. That's all. Everything else, as much as I enjoyed and absorbed everything, just seemed like a blur!! But it was definitely good times. We ate a lotta good food too! Man you gotta make your way to Vancouver one of these days, whether to race or sight see, it's worth it! Oh and there were these two guys from a Portland, Oregan team (I think) who looked like you! It was kinda funny kinda freaky. hehe The competition days were kinda like a repeat of China. It rained like crazy on the first day, and then the next day the skies cleared up and it was BEAUTIFUL! It was also nice out there cuz since it's so north, the sun would be out til like 9.. but as a result we'd stay up later than needed and would also eat dinner later!!
the mythical beer unicorn
Whoah.. been spending too much time in the sun, I'm gettin all goofy. Anyways, during the trip I was contemplating a carbon fiber paddle cuz I've been wanting one.. I was actually supposed to get one for my birthday!! But then Burn Water was waaay back ordered so Gary couldn't organize it all and stuff.. But that's okay. So we saw the guy at the competition and lucky me, one of the captains did some legal work for the guy so he's giving the team a discount! Yaay! So hopefully I can get my paddle before the Long Beach race. :D Next item, a nice pfd.
After our victory, all I could think about was.. "damn, life is SWEET".. and then it was all crushed when I got back to LA cuz I had to wait for my grades to come out. But luckily they came out yesterday and I passed everything that I needed to pass.. with decent grades too! So yay for that. As for life being sweet.. it really is. I have so much stuff to look forward to and I'm excited about all of it. I don't want this summer to be over, even though it's just started!!!
